Personal At Home Laser Hair Removal

By

While dealing with unwanted hair is a huge hassle for many of us, there are some of us who for whatever reason just aren’t comfortable going in to a laser center to have it zapped away for good. Did you know that you don’t even have to go in to a clinic or technician to take advantage of permanent laser hair removal? Several companies have recently released new personal laser hair removal equipment you can use at home. These lasers are smaller in size than their larger counterparts that are widely used in local clinics and treatment centers but they work in much the same way and deliver a long term solution to unwanted body and facial hair.

How it Works

Just like a regular hair removal laser, a short pulse of light targets the dark pigment in the hair and inside the hair follicle. The heat from the laser causes the follicle to no longer have the ability to produce new hair growth and any existing hair left in the follicle falls out within a short period of time. As with any other laser hair removal treatment, it requires several treatments targeting the individual hairs that make up each growth cycle before you will be completely hair free. Because it uses the coloration in the hair and follicle to concentrate the heat from the laser, having at least some color to your hair is required to get good results.

Does it Require Special Training?

Most personal laser hair removal systems and devices are designed to be both safe and easy to use. At the present time there is only one that is FDA cleared for home use, this is called the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System. The system is made for use by both men and women so anyone wanting to get rid of body hair from the comfort of home can use it. While there are several other brands out there, you may want to stick with one you know has been given the green light by the FDA for safety reasons. The system comes with detailed instructions that walk you through exactly how to use it and get the results you are looking for.

Fortunately, it isn't a very complex process. Just like having it done in a salon or at a spa, you start with clean skin and shave away any hair of the surface of the skin. After that, the rest is pretty much up to the device.

Does it Hurt?

The sensation is just about the same as if you were to have the procedure performed by a laser technician. I would describe it as being similar to the feeling of being snapped with a rubber band in combination with a warming sensation from the heat generated by the laser. If you’ve ever waxed any portion of your body or plucked a few hairs out on your own with a tweezers, you’ve easily experienced pain that is equivalent or greater. One benefit to using a home system is you can feel free to work on a small area and take a break from it at any time without worrying about what anyone else thinks. The new TRIA model even has multiple comfort settings so you can pick what works best for you.

How Much Does a Personal Laser Hair Removal System Cost?

They usually range in price from around $500 to around $650. How does this compare to traditional laser hair removal prices? The answer depends on how much of your body you plan to treat. To compare the cost between the two, take the cost of a single treatment at a provider and multiply it by the number of treatments you would need to achieve permanent hair removal. For most people, this number is between 6 and 8.

Here’s an example:

Cost of One Laser Hair Removal Session for the Legs $300 x 8 Sessions = $2400 total cost.

In the example above you would save yourself about $1900 by going with the at home option. As you can see, while the price of the home system may seem expensive at first; it offers significant savings over the long term if you plan of doing a large area such as your legs, arms, back, chest, or a combination of several of these. Just needing to get a little touch up around the upper lip or brow area? You are probably better off just going somewhere and having it done as your total expense will likely fall into the $250 to $450 range. Unless of course you plan to sell the device when you are finished, then it might actually make sense to invest in a home laser hair removal system because you would get the use of the device and probably get quite a bit of your money back when you sold it. Sometimes you can even find a great deal and buy one for under $500 by looking at sites such as eBay.

Does it Really Work?

Yep, it sure does! After you have used it for several sessions, you will start to notice that any hair you did have in the treated area will start to fall out and new hair growth will stop until the next growth cycle begins. Once you have treated the area during all of the major growth cycles, the results are pretty much permanent. The technology is very similar to what professionals charge for the same service. The biggest difference is the smaller size of the unit itself. If you are looking for a long term solution to getting rid of hair, at home laser hair removal is an effective option you might want to consider. Don't have the money for a DIY option at the moment? You aren't completely out of luck! You can always still go the traditional route and pay for one treatment at a time from a local provider as you can afford it.
